Social Workers Prepared to Help Victims of Devastating Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan
In recognition of World Social Work Day, March 15, 2011, NASW encourages members to get involved!

In the aftermath of the deadly earthquake in Japan and the tragic tsunami it triggered, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is issuing an alert to its 145,000 members to help support recovery efforts for victims and their families.  On World Social Work Day, March 15, 2011, we are especially mindful of our international colleagues.  If you would like to join in the social work response to this disaster, you can donate through the NASW Foundation’s Social Work Disaster Assistance Fund to assist social workers and/or social welfare organizations who can provide help.

In this complex and developing disaster, our colleagues in the Japanese professional social work association are uniquely suited to assess the disaster environment in a culturally competent manner and to provide leadership in promoting effective disaster relief and recovery efforts.  100% of donations through the NASW Foundation for the earthquake and tsunami in Japan will be forwarded to our professional colleagues in Japan to enable social workers to assist in the ongoing relief efforts there.

NASW recognizes that some of our members and friends in the international community have lost loved ones through this tragedy.   Our thoughts are with those affected by this terrible disaster.

Are you or do you know a Vermont State Employee?

Recently the Vermont Employee Benefits office issued a letter to all employees enrolled in the state group health plan.  Click here for a copy (PDF) of the letter.

The letter was sent to fulfill a requirement in federal law to give notice that, as a self-funded employer, the state was opting not to participate in the mental health benefits requirements of recent federal legislation.

This does not mean that Vermont state employees enrolled in the group health plan will not have mental health benefits. There are no changes being made to Vermont employee mental health benefits. The reason for the notice is that Vermont opted out of federal requirements because our own Vermont state requirements for mental health parity exceed those in the federal law.

If you have questions or concerns about the letter you received or the status of your own mental health and substance abuse benefits under the state plan, please contact the Employee Benefits Unit at 802-828-0648 or 802-828-3455 or write a letter to them at State of Vermont, Dept. of Human Resources, Employee Benefits Unite, 144 State Street,. Montpelier, VT 056209-1701.

The Quality Measures Workgroup, formed by the Health Information Technology Policy Committee (a federal advisory committee that advises the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), is developing recommendations on clinical quality measures enabled for use within electronic health record systems.

As part of this work, the Workgroup identified important measure concepts within the domain areas of Patient and Family Engagement, Clinical Appropriateness/Efficiency, Care Coordination, Patient Safety, and Population and Public Health.

The Workgroup currently requests public comment on its list of prioritized measure concepts, specifically seeking detailed examples of measures relevant to each measure concept that are HIT-sensitive, parsimonious, capable of demonstrating preventable burden, capable of assessing health risk status and outcomes, and longitudinal.

Please see the Quality Measures Workgroup Request for Comment, posted on the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology's FACA blog, for more detail on the Workgroup's request for comment and for the list of the prioritized measure concepts. All comments should be submitted via this online tool: https://www.altarum.net/survey/qmrfc.aspx.

Your comments are greatly appreciated as they will contribute to the HIT Policy Committee's work in identifying electronically-specified clinical quality measures.

Thank you,
David Lansky, Chair
