National Call for Nominations – Elected and Appointed

It is time again for the important task of identifying nominees for national elected and appointed positions. Your active participation in the nomination process is necessary to ensure a strong pool of candidates for leadership positions. Your role is vital to the National Committee on Nominations & Leadership Identification (NCNLI) that develops the election slate and to NASW’s President who makes appointments to national volunteer units.

The deadline date for receiving all nominations for elected positions is close of business (5:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time) on Friday, October 29, 2010. The deadline date must be adhered to. A postmarked date is not acceptable. Applications received after the deadline date will be considered for appointments only.

The application form is accessible through NASW’s Web site at http://www.socialworkers.org/governance/voting/nominations2010/bioApp.pdf. Materials may be faxed to the national office at 202/336-8313 to the attention of NCNLI/President’s Office or may be sent to us by U.S. mail.

National NASW 2010 Awards

As you know, we are transitioning the submission process for nominations for the NASW and NASW Foundation Recognition Awards from paper to online.  Our goal is to have the system up and ready by the end of August.  We anticipate that complete submissions will be due by late October and will make an announcement when we have a more definitive schedule with which we can all work.  The online process will mirror what currently exists e.g., criteria and support documentation.  In the interim, please visit the NASW Website at http://www.socialworkers.org/governance/awards/default.asp and the NASW Foundation Web site at http://www.naswfoundation.org/recognition/default.asp to familiarize yourself with the information that is available.  If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact Doreta Richards at drichards@naswdc.org  or Kerri Criswell at KCriswell@naswdc.org .

The National Association of Social Workers is announcing it has formed an advisory committee of Hollywood writers, award-winning journalists, social workers involved in the media and others to educate the public about social workers and increase awareness of the profession.

The NASW Communications Network (NCN) Advisory Committee members include author and Pulitzer-winning Washington Post reporter Kirstin Downey; Academy Award-nominated director and screenwriter Oren Moverman; social worker, anger management expert and movie consultant George Anderson; author and screenwriter Antwone Fisher; and social worker, author and national columnist Sherry Amatenstein.

“Social work is an exciting and rewarding profession that sometimes does not get the notice and respect it deserves in media and society,” said NASW Executive Director Elizabeth J. Clark, PhD, ACSW, MPH. “We are thrilled that the members of our new advisory committee want to help attract civic-minded students to the profession, help more people find and support social work services in their communities, and include social work perspectives in a variety of media.”

The NCN Advisory Committee will identify ways to promote social work roles in television and film, position more social workers as consumer education experts, inform public policy debates with social work research, and increase interest among youth about the social work profession.

Below is a list of advisory board members. Please click on their names to read full biographies:

NASW’s new media advisory committee builds upon the work of NASW Past President Suzanne Dworak-Peck, who founded NCN in the early 1990s. Part of the NCN’s activities include acting as a Hollywood referral source. NCN has now been incorporated into the multi-year National Social Work Public Education Campaign, which is made possible by donations made to the NASW Foundation.

Since the awareness campaign launched in 2005, NASW has placed print ads in national women’s magazines, conducted national consumer issue surveys, placed billboards around state capitals and in Times Square, implemented social media campaigns, aired a national video, built a series of educational websites, and connected hundreds of media professionals with social work experts.
