Information and Resources for Veterans and
Please scroll down for
newly posted resources and programs. Vermont is home to veterans of many armed conflicts—from World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan. The demand for social work services for veterans and their families will increase as a result of recent large deployments. For every soldier deployed there is a family who is affected by the soldier’s absence from home. This means not only spouses who are doing the parenting for two, but also children who may be in preschool or school settings, elders whose sons and daughters or grandsons and granddaughters are deployed, siblings, and so on. Beyond the family, the “workplace,” “church” and “local club” families are also affected by their absence. The needs of the soldiers and their families may come to light in schools, churches, community agencies, mental health centers, hospitals, churches, and the criminal justice system, as well as in peer recovery organizations. NASW-VT is beginning to build this section of the website to provide education to social workers about veterans’ needs, the nature and implications of Traumatic Brain Injury, PTSD, and other injuries of war, and education about new treatment models and services networks. In addition, the section includes information directly helpful to veterans and family members. This section is intended to provide resources to social workers who can share them with veterans and their families. Important: If you find a new resource, please share it with the NASW-VT office (naswvt@naswvt.org) so that we can get it posted. The Department of Defense has launched www.MilitaryKidsConnect.org, a new website for children experiencing the challenges of military deployments. This site may be useful to social workers who work with military youth. The highly interactive website, www.MilitaryKidsConnect.org, created by psychologists at the DoD's National Center for Telehealth and Technology, helps children of deployed parents cope with the stress, changing responsibilities, and concern for the safety of their parents. The center, known as T2, developed the website with informative videos, educational tools, and engaging games and activities for three age groups: Youth, ages 6 to 8; Tween, ages 9 to 12; and Teen, ages 13 to 17. The site features monitored online social network forums for the groups to safely share their experiences with deployments. The website has features that will help children, parents, and educators navigate the wide range of practical and emotional challenges military families must live with throughout the deployment cycle. Class Schedule and more info. Since 1993, Gift From Within (a nonprofit organization for survivors of trauma and victimization) has been helping trauma survivors and their loved ones learn about PTSD. Our Founder is Dr. Frank Ochberg, an expert in the traumatic stress field, and a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Traumatic Studies. We have a brand new resource section on Gift From Within that addresses psychological issues for veterans and their loved ones. The goal of our new Military Family Resource section is to provide information about PTSD for both the veteran and the military family. It is our hope that the information here lays the groundwork for further exploration into this subject matter and to de-stigmatize, and normalize symptoms of PTSD. Here is an illustrated essay that explores military PTSD. Click here: "Suicide and the Military: - Prevention and Information for veterans and caregivers." Collection of webcasts and podcasts
