Selection Criteria and Nomination Form

NOTE: Deadline for Nominations is July 15, 2010

Social Worker of the Year

  • NASW-VT member in good standing.
  • Lives and works in the State of Vermont.
  • Consistently demonstrates the six core values and ethical principles of social work: service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence.
  • Has made significant contributions in one or more of the following areas: Service, advocacy, social policy, teaching, research, administration, program design and implementation, community development and work with diverse or multi-cultural populations.
  • Demonstrates outstanding leadership skills.
  • Contributes to the public’s knowledge and positive image of social work.
  • Maintains a commitment to ongoing professional education of self and others.
  • Maintains uninterrupted membership in NASW.

Vermont Legislator/Public Official of the Year

  • Must be an elected or appointed public official who is serving in office at the time of nomination (local or state).
  • Demonstrates outstanding leadership in the advancement of public policy through legislative and/or political action in the service of social justice, civil rights, human rights and the active engagement of social welfare issues and/or contributes to the social work profession by promoting the advancement and/or protection of professional social work practice.
  • Exemplifies social work values and ethics by making significant contributions to the lives of individuals, families, vulnerable and marginalized populations, the community and society.
  • Supports the NASW-VT legislative agenda.

Public Citizen of the Year

  • A community member who lives and works in Vermont and does not hold a social work degree.
  • Addresses social issues that support equal rights regardless of race, creed, gender, sexual orientation or physical challenge.
  • Advocates and/or works with vulnerable and at risk populations.
  • Has made significant contributions to the lives of individuals, families, communities and the human services.
  • Advocates and contributes to the public’s awareness of social problems.
  • Demonstrates outstanding leadership and initiative through political and social action.
  • Demonstrates the highest standards of personal conduct and integrity and exhibits social work values and ethics.

Lifetime Achievement Award

  • NASW-VT member in good standing.
  • Meets all the criteria for Social Worker of the Year.
  • Demonstrates one or more of the following:
  • Repeated outstanding achievements
  • Recognition beyond the social work profession
  • Contributions with a lasting impact
  • Outstanding creativity and courage
  • Demonstrates the highest standards of personal conduct and professional integrity.
  • Advances the values, ethics and knowledge of the profession.
  • Supports public and social policies that ensure equal rights for all regardless of race, creed, religion, gender, sexual orientation, income or physical challenge.
  • Advocates for social justice.
  • Serves the community on boards, civic groups, advocacy for causes, etc.
  • Demonstrates achievement in areas of expertise- publications, research, contributions to theory or development of a better understanding of social issues, supervision, practice consultation, etc.

NASW-VT Chapter Volunteer of the Year

  • NASW-VT member in good standing.
  • Has maintained membership in the chapter for at least five years.
  • Actively participates in the local chapter and demonstrates a consistent commitment by volunteering at the annual conference, educational trainings and outreach programs, serving on the board or a Chapter committee.
  • Supports public and social policies that ensure equal rights for all regardless of race, creed, religion, gender, sexual orientation, income or physical ability.
  • Consistent demonstration of the six core values and ethical principles of social work; service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence.

Social Work Student of the Year (MSW and/or BSW)

  • Currently enrolled in CSWE-accredited school of social work in Vermont.
  • NASW-VT member in good standing.
  • Student in good academic standing.
  • Demonstrates personal and professional integration of education and field placement.
  • Volunteers in the community or is politically active.
  • Demonstrates in outstanding leadership qualities.

Social Work Educator of the Year

  • Must be currently teaching at a CSWE-accredited school of social work in Vermont.
  • NASW-VT member in good standing.
  • Must have advanced the values, ethics and knowledge of the profession.
  • Demonstrates the highest standards of personal conduct and professional integrity.
  • Achievement in areas of expertise- publications, research, contributions to theory or development of a better understanding of social issues, supervision, practice consultation, etc.

Nominations and Selection Process:

NASW VT’s Chapter Committee on Nominations and Leadership Identification (CCNLI) is responsible for Chapter awards program. CCNLI will review the nominations submitted and present selection recommendations to the Board for final approval. Any member of NASW-VT may nominate candidates for the awards with the following exceptions: (1) for Social Work Student of the Year - only current faculty, staff and field instructors from the department of social work in a CSWE-accredited social work program may nominate a student for this award; (2) Social Work Educator of the Year - only current faculty, staff, field instructors and students from the department of social work in a CSWE-accredited social work program may nominate a current faculty member for this award.

Nomination Process

NASW VT Chapter members may nominate a person for any of the above categories by submitting this form with additional 3-4 paragraphs stating how the nominee has met the above criteria and why they should be selected for this award. This information may include the nominee’s contributions, community involvement, previous awards, resume, letters of recommendation, etc. NASW-VT would like a digital picture of the selected award recipient for our Chapter newsletter.
